AUD/JPY is making up for daily losses, reaching a level of around 111.00 during Asian hours on Monday. The exchange rate is gaining as the Australian dollar recovers from recent losses despite increased safe-haven demand amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Israel carried out bulky attacks on Beirut after Hezbollah fired rockets across the border in the early morning hours Monday following coordinated U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran over the weekend that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Israeli military also issued evacuation orders for several Lebanese cities.

US President Donald Trump said hundreds of targets were hit, including Revolutionary Guard facilities, air defense systems, nine ships and maritime infrastructure. He added that military operations will continue until all goals are achieved.

Australia’s S&P Global Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) was revised down in February to 51.0 from 52.3, the weakest reading in four months. Meanwhile, the TD-MI inflation index fell 0.2% month-on-month (m/m), reversing January’s 0.2% gain and marking the first decline since August last year.

The AUD/JPY cross rate may come under pressure as the Japanese yen (JPY) strengthens amid rising safe-haven demand amid the Middle East crisis. The JPY may gain further support from hawkish comments from Bank of Japan (BoJ) Vice President Ryozo Himino, who said on Monday that while policy remains “somewhat accommodative,” the central bank should gradually raise interest rates if its economic and inflation forecasts come true.
