GBP/JPY is trading with a slight downward bias on Thursday, although it lacks powerful complementary selling and is recovering some of its intraday losses amid continued market volatility. The ongoing US-Israel war with Iran keeps sentiment volatile, negatively impacting the British Pound (GBP), while the Japanese Yen (JPY) remains flat in all major markets except the US Dollar (USD) and Canadian Dollar (CAD).
At the time of writing, the cross is trading around 210.90, trying to recover after falling to 210.35 during the Asian session.
From a technical perspective, the daily chart shows short-term consolidation, with prices trapped between the 100-day and 50-day basic moving average (SMA) at 210.21 and 211.27, respectively.
Dynamics indicators suggest a slightly bearish overtone. The relative strength index (RSI) is hovering around 46, remaining below the neutral level of 50, indicating reduced buying interest.
Meanwhile, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) is showing early signs of weakening, with the MACD line slipping below the signal line and the histogram turning slightly negative.
On the other hand, a decisive break below the 100-day SMA could expose the support zone at 207.50, which marks the February low. A sustained move below this level will shift attention towards the 200-day SMA near 205.00.
On the other hand, a rebound above the 50-day SMA would be needed to alleviate immediate downward pressure. A sustained break higher could open the door towards the 213.50 resistance area marked by recent highs, followed by the February high near 215.00.
