Balaji Srinivasan’s online school, a “digital nomad” community, is looking for a recent campus in Kazakhstan after the Forest City campus had its operating license revoked over alleged violations regarding the employ of its premises.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Kazakhstan’s Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry Zhaslan Madiyev and Srinivasan on the establishment of the first network school campus in Kazakhstan, according to statement from the ministry.

An agreement from Kazakhstan gives the Network School a potential recent base after its Johor branch was ordered to cease operations with effect from Wednesday. Kazakhstan is positioning itself as an emerging tech hub, including plans for Central Asia’s first “crypto city” in Alatau.

“Ironically, this whole drama with Balaji literally confirmed the thesis about the state of the network,” said Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner of Dragonfly Capital. “The whole idea of a network state involves a dense pool of talent and capital and joint negotiations with states. Malaysia’s drama forced Balaji to negotiate better terms with another state in order to copy and paste the network there.”

“Our new campus will become a haven for global techno-optimism with expedited visas, streamlined re-housing and active talent recruitment,” Srinivasan he said Tuesday.

The network school is facing the loss of its Digital Malaysia status

The recent MOU with Kazakhstan comes as the Forest City campus faces regulatory action on several fronts.

On Tuesday, Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) canceled a business license to NSO Malaysia Sdn Bhd, which runs a chain school, accusing the company of violating licensing conditions and requirements regarding the employ of premises.

This led to the establishment of the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) announcing is taking immediate steps to revoke its Malaysia Digital NSO Malaysia status, which requires participating companies to comply with all local and federal regulations.

Malaysia Digital is an award given to qualified technology and digital companies, providing them with tax benefits, freedom of ownership and employment of local and foreign workers, among others.

Meanwhile, Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the Chief Minister of Johor State, did so he insisted Malaysian federal authorities to continue investigation into network school’s violation of immigration laws.

“This matter cannot be taken lightly, especially as Johor is a strategic entry point for the country bordering Singapore. Any weaknesses or abuses in the immigration system must be addressed quickly, decisively and uncompromisingly,” Onn said.

Srinivasan on Friday negative announces the liquidation of the Network School, stating that it has received two notices, one requesting a “change in the sign text”, the other regarding a coworking space created as a result of the merger of two adjacent units that had a valid license on one side, but not on the other.

“We have a recovery period for both issues and we will fix them soon. But other than that, there is no impact on our members,” he said.

Cointelegraph has asked Srinivasan and Network School for comment.
