Base, the Layer 2 Ethereum blockchain from cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, has launched a tool to connect Base accounts to artificial intelligence agents for blockchain operations.
Resist he said on Tuesday that the recent Base MCP (Model Context Protocol) allows users to ask AI agents such as Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT to transfer funds, exchange tokens, check balances, view transaction history and employ supported apps in the ecosystem.
The tool allows users to manage their cryptocurrencies directly from the AI model’s chat interface and can also interact with crypto protocols such as Morpho, Moonwell, Uniswap, Aerodrome, Avantis, Bankr and Virtuals, Base said.
The AI agent proposes an action in the chat, after which the Base wallet opens in a recent window where users can confirm or cancel the transaction. The agent does not have access to private keys, and each action must be confirmed by the user.
Intermediate payments are being touted as the next major employ case for cryptocurrencies, as proponents say artificial intelligence models will struggle to access the banking system and will need to employ digital assets to conduct transactions.
Base says every transaction proposed by an agent goes through the same verification process that users see for every Base account application, with asset changes simulated before the user confirms.
Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product at Coinbase, he said Fortune that “unlike isolated agent wallets that only reside in the terminal, your primary account travels with you – transactions, history and wallet sync whether you are an agent or in the primary app.”
Base MCP will also expand the employ of the Coinbase x402 protocol, an AI-powered agent-based payment standard that the company introduced in May 2025.

Murr described MCP as a “nice wrapper” on APIs. Together with x402, it enables a recent microtransaction economy in which agents can make miniature payments in cryptocurrencies.
However, this economy is currently in its early stages, and x402 has only processed $1.1 million in the last 30 days, According to to x402scan.

The employ of AI agents for cryptocurrency payments has its detractors, with a recent research paper from Google and leading universities stating that AI agents should be treated as an untrusted element of the system.
The researchers said AI agents should clearly distinguish instructions from untrusted data to avoid attackers from deceiving the agent by hiding malicious instructions.
Earlier this week, software platform Socket discovered malware targeting cryptocurrency developers by injecting hidden instructions to hijack AI coding assistants.
