Layer 1 blockchain algorithm Algorand has published its plan to deal with the potential threat of quantum computing, along with a roadmap to update the network infrastructure by the end of 2027.

Algorand Foundation’s Chief Technology Officer, Bruno Martins he said The updates on Thursday will aim to make the network broadly quantum resilient, a threat it has been researching and preparing for for several years.

“Governments, standards bodies and security experts around the world are already preparing for a future in which quantum computers can break many of the cryptographic systems that protect today’s digital infrastructure,” Martins said.

Algorand is the latest crypto project to pursue quantum computing as users share growing concerns that the technology could soon crack the encryption that underlies the ecosystem, putting billions of dollars’ worth of assets at risk of exploitation.

Quantum computers, a technology expected to be much more powerful than today’s supercomputers, are still in their early stages of development, but Google researchers said in a March paper that they may need fewer resources than previously estimated to crack the cryptography that protects blockchains.

The article also noted that Algorand was arguably the most quantum-ready blockchain, while Ethereum and Solana are also actively exploring solutions that can be ready for quantum computing.

Algorand’s Martins said the roadmap includes novel accounts based on the Falcon signature scheme, designed using quantum-resistant cryptography.

He added that the blockchain will also update its consensus mechanism based on current cryptography, which is not quantum-proof. It will also update how accounts participating in the consensus work and is exploring options including a “hybrid mix” of classic and quantification-resistant signatures.

Quantum threats to cryptography are a growing concern for governments and businesses, and many companies are implementing plans before quantum computers are powerful enough to break encryption, which could happen as early as 2030.

France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI said on Tuesday it would stop certifying security products without quantum-resistant encryption to encourage companies to create only quantum-secure products by 2030.

The US National Security Agency also requires that all novel national security systems apply quantum-resistant algorithms from January 1, 2027, while non-quantum-resistant systems must be phased out by the end of 2030.

Google has set a deadline of 2029 to be ready for the event due to rapid advances in quantum computing and error correction hardware.

Last month, Tezos launched a prototype payments blockchain designed to be resistant to attacks by quantum computers, and stablecoin issuer Circle published a roadmap in April to make its Arc blockchain quantum-ready.

Scientists at the California Institute of Technology have also theorized that a functional quantum computer could require far fewer resources than previously thought and could be deployed before 2030.
