Right now, investors are very focused on SpaceX’s upcoming IPO (scheduled for June 12). They are also eagerly awaiting details regarding Anthropic’s IPO (likely later this year).

The point is that UK investors don’t actually have to wait for an IPO to gain access to these growing businesses. Here’s a look at how to get portfolio exposure today.

Is it worth buying Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Plc shares today?

Before you make a decision, please take a moment to read this report. Despite ongoing uncertainty from US tariffs to global conflicts, Mark Rogers and his team believe that many UK shares are still trading at significant discounts, offering many potential learning opportunities for experienced investors.

That’s why this could be the perfect time to conduct this valuable research – Mark’s analysts have combed the markets to discover his 5 favorite long-term “buys”. Please do not make any essential decisions before watching them.

Access to the most exhilarating private companies in the world

The A Scottish mortgage investment fund (LSE: SMT) is a growth-oriented product investing primarily in listed companies. However, it has exposure to private companies.

Looking at his holdings today, he has positions in both SpaceX and Anthropic. It also invests in a slew of other exhilarating private companies, such as Databricks (the data firm’s main rival Snowflake), Stripe and Revolut.

Now Anthropic’s position here is quite petite (only about 1% of the trust’s portfolio). However, it’s a different story with SpaceX. At the end of April, this represented approximately 18% of the portfolio.

I suspect the importance is even greater today because I don’t think the April 30 NAV calculations include the $1.8 trillion valuation that is being talked about for SpaceX today.

Either way, it’s a gigantic holding. If an investor puts money into this mutual fund, he will receive significant exposure to SpaceX.

Is it worth visiting?

So is trust worth including in a diversified portfolio? I think so. I have already mentioned some of the private companies in the portfolio. Publicly traded companies are equally exhilarating.

Some names worth highlighting here include: Nvidia, Semiconductor from Taiwan, Amazon, ASML, MercadoLibreAND Ferrari. For one reason or another, I’m bullish on all of these stocks.

Notably, the fund has built a portfolio around a number of long-term themes that are transformative in nature. These include artificial intelligence and computing, recent technologies, the evolution of transport and the digitization of finance.

An impressive achievement

Another thing I like about this product is its track record. Although the Scottish Mortgage Company suffered a huge decline in 2022 as interest rates rose (which is a future risk), the long-term performance has been very forceful.

For example, over the last 10 years the trust’s share price has risen from around 260p to 1,540p. This equates to an annual rate of return of approximately 20%, which is a much better rate of return than indexes such as FTSE100 generated (10-year FTSE 100 return is approximately 7%).

Of course, there is no guarantee that future results will be good. As risk warnings always say, past performance is not indicative of future returns.

However, I believe that if properly selected, this trust can play a valuable role in an ISA fund, i.e. a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) (I keep it in my portfolio) and it is worth taking a closer look at it. The main attraction is the fact that it offers exposure to SpaceX and Anthropic.
