Donald Trump, president of the United States, announced on Friday via Truth Social a novel round of tariffs on the European Union (EU) on cars and trucks.

I am pleased to announce that because the European Union is not fully complying with the agreed trade agreement, next week I will boost tariffs on cars and trucks imported into the United States from the European Union. The tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that if they manufacture cars and trucks in the USA. Plants, there will be no TARIFFS. Multiple car and truck plants are currently under construction with an investment of over $100 billion, a RECORD in the history of car and truck production. These plants, staffed by American workers, will open soon. There has never been anything like what is happening in America today! Thank you for your interest in this matter.”

Market reaction:

The US dollar (USD) remains relatively unchanged near the 98.00 price zone following President Trump’s announcement of a 25% boost in EU vehicle tariffs.
