U.Today – The orange logo, easily recognized by millions of people around the world, celebrates its 14th anniversary. On this day in 2010, a pseudonymous designer released the now iconic Bitcoin logo, a visual representation that was intended to embody the entire Bitcoin movement.
Bitcoin historian Pete Rizzo highlighted the milestone in a tweet, writing: “Happy birthday to the iconic Bitcoin logo. 14 years ago, an anonymous artist created one of the best brands of all time and released it for free. The rest is history. ” Rizzo’s reflection highlights how the logo was gifted to the world, launching a powerful brand that represents much more than just currency.
As we reported, on October 31, the Bitcoin community celebrated another milestone commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Bitcoin white paper. Satoshi Nakamoto published a white paper on Bitcoin on October 31, 2008.
The history of the Bitcoin logo
The Bitcoin logo, like the cryptocurrency itself, has evolved through change, community participation and, at times, controversy.
The earliest form of the logo was created by Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, shortly after the software’s inception and featured BC on a gold coin, probably around January or March 2009.
Fast forward to February 24, 2010, and Satoshi is still testing this design. Over a year later, he revised his original artwork, replacing the letter “BC” with the letter “B” with two vertical lines embedded in a gold coin.
On November 1, 2010, the well-known Bitcoin logo and its designer appeared out of nowhere. With his first post on Bitcoin Talk, an anonymous user using the pseudonym “bitboy” changed the visual representation of Bitcoin forever. The designer replaced the gold coin with a distinctive orange circle and rotated the “₿” logo 14% clockwise.
This design has since served as the official logo of Bitcoin, thanks to forceful community support. After publishing the final version of the Bitcoin logo, “bitboy” allegedly announced: “Now anyone can freely use the graphics, even for commercial purposes, thanks to this license and is not bound by any restrictions.”
