STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Shipping company Maersk is assessing contingency strategies in Canada, the company said on Thursday after the country’s two main rail freight transport companies closed their networks due to a labour dispute.
The Danish company, one of the world’s largest container shipping groups, said in a statement to customers that it is still accepting bookings for shipments to and from origins and destinations served by rail through Canadian ports.
“Given the current situation affecting Canadian rail services, we are actively monitoring the changing circumstances,” the release said.
“Our team is communicating with our rail partners and assessing contingency strategies as the situation evolves.”
Canadian National Railways (TSX:) and Canadian Pacific (NYSE:) About 10,000 workers were thrown out of work in Kansas City on Thursday in an unprecedented strike that will paralyze rail freight transport across the country and have implications across the United States.
