Aleph Zero Foundation is excited to announce the launch of its ZK privacy EVM Layer 2 solution powered by Arbitrum Orbit on Gelato RaaS on the testnet. It is the first EVM-compliant privacy solution capable of validating ZKs in less than a second, significantly improving the end-user experience by making on-chain privacy virtually instantaneous.

Aleph Zero also revealed its long-term development strategy for zkOS: a client-side, off-chain, zero-knowledge privacy system. zkOS aims to offer Privacy-as-a-Service (PaaS) by seamlessly integrating applications on WASM and EVM compatible networks. These initiatives open the Aleph Zero ecosystem to a wider range of EVM users and represent the first step towards potential multi-chain development.

With zkOS, users can conduct private transactions and interact with dApps without compromising their data. This system enables high-bandwidth applications such as privacy-preserving DeFi applications, RWAs, artificial intelligence, and enterprise solutions, expanding the reach of privacy technologies to a wider audience.

“Privacy remains largely unaddressed; it is expensive, complex to use and build, and its use cases lack economic incentives. With Aleph Zero’s zkOS and zk-privacy EVM Layer 2, we want to change this not only in the Aleph Zero ecosystem, but also in the broader ecosystem thanks to the flexibility of the Arbitrum Orbit stack and our collaboration with the idOS network.” -Antoni Żolciak, co-founder of Aleph Zero

Aleph Zero’s WASM Layer 1 substrate-based blockchain, launched in November 2021, offers developers sub-second finality, support for 170 validator nodes and over 40 external teams building various applications. Layer 1 will now also serve as the data availability layer for L2 EVM, its applications, and L3 application chains.

The up-to-date ZK-privacy EVM Layer 2 developer testnet is now live and inviting developers and early adopters. Integration examples include Rarible, an NFT company, and a yet-to-be-announced team working on novel prediction markets. Developer Mainnet is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2024.

Aleph Zero EVM, ZK’s layer 2 privacy rollup on Ethereum, was built in partnership with Gelato, leveraging Arbitrum Anytrust DAC technology to provide a quick, secure, and scalable execution environment. It offers block times of up to 250 ms with near-instantaneous transaction completion and processes thousands of transactions per second, making it one of the fastest EVM chains on the market.

“Aleph Zero EVM leverages Arbitrum Orbits’ advanced web3 scaling stack – with the most powerful development tools – to create the most advanced privacy-enhancing blockchain infrastructure on the market.” said Luis Schliesske, founder of Gelato. “Privacy will become a major topic in 2024 and beyond as more and more mainstream operate cases emerge.

Aleph Zero EVM Layer 2 Developer Testnet includes Gelato’s extensive development tools and third-party infrastructure such as oracles, block explorers, and multi-sig, making it a versatile platform.

ZkOS Aleph Zero uses the Halo2 commitment scheme with KZG to provide speed and a universally trusted configuration. While requiring more developer effort than alternatives like Noir or Risc0, zkToolkit Aleph Zero simplifies zkOS integration, ensuring high performance and ease of operate for existing applications in both the Aleph Zero and Ethereum ecosystems. Initial benchmarks show that ZkOS zero-knowledge tests can be completed in 600-800 ms on standard devices using browsers such as Safari or Chrome.

Development plan

The EVM testnet was unveiled today, with Mainnet scheduled for release in Q3 2024, enabling developers to deploy production-ready applications with optional privacy features. zkOS MVP is expected to be awarded by Q3 2024, and ZK identity features with idOS and private operations on any ERC-20 tokens will be awarded by Q4 2024. Advanced zkOS features will be available in Q1 2025 r. Users can find more details in the roadmap section of alephzero.org.

Use cases

Proven operate cases working with Aleph Zero and zkOS include:

  • Holy: : Improving card payments with privacy technology.
