(Reuters) – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told some shareholders the company is considering changing its management structure to a for-profit business over which the nonprofit’s board has no control, The Information reported on Friday.

According to Altman, one scenario the board is considering is a for-profit company that benefits from rivals such as Anthropic and xAI, the report said, citing a person who heard the comments.

Restructuring discussions are fluid and Altman and his fellow executives may ultimately decide to take a different approach, The Information added.

In response to Reuters queries about the report, OpenAI said: “We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone. This nonprofit organization is core to our mission and will continue to exist.”
