The Biden administration announced recent measures Wednesday to speed things up development of recent nuclear energy projects in the USAin an effort to lend a hand reduce the risks associated with building plants that could cost tens of billions of dollars.
The last one on a commercial scale the U.S.-built reactor, Southern Co.’s Vogtle nuclear project, was more than $16 billion over budget and seven years behind schedule.
The White House has established a recent working group – which includes members of federal agencies as well as nuclear developers, contractors, labor organizations and nonprofits – that will try to identify ways to reduce costs and schedule overruns in plant construction.
It also said the Army would seek feedback on a program to deploy advanced nuclear reactors to provide power to multiple facilities across the U.S.
The Biden administration has said nuclear power is needed to meet U.S. climate and spotless energy goals, but more than a dozen reactors have been closed since 2013, losing out to cheaper power from natural gas and renewables.
